A garment steamer removes wrinkles with moist heat instead of pressure. The steam relaxes the fibers, gravity pulls the fabric straight, and the creases fall out. Used well, it is faster and gentler than an iron. Used badly, it leaves water spots on silk, shine on polyester and limp collars.

Steam is part of my everyday work: in textile finishing, heat and moisture are what set and relax fabric. Here is how to steam each fabric safely, plus three upright steamers worth considering. The product section is a specification analysis, not a hands-on test. Here is how we review.

How to use a garment steamer: the basic method

  1. Fill with distilled or filtered water if your tap water is hard. Minerals build up as scale and can spit white flakes onto clothes.
  2. Heat it up fully before you start, so the first burst is steam, not water.
  3. Hang the garment on a sturdy hanger, ideally the steamer’s own hook or a door frame.
  4. Test first on an inside seam or hem.
  5. Steam from top to bottom in slow vertical strokes, holding the fabric taut from the bottom with your free hand. Keep the head moving.
  6. Let it cool and dry on the hanger for a few minutes before wearing. Warm, damp fabric creases again easily.

How to steam each fabric

FabricSteam settingHow closeTips
CottonHighHead can touch the fabricPull taut; steam the inside of collars and cuffs too
LinenHighTouching or very closeSteam while slightly damp for the best result; expect a relaxed finish, not crisp
Wool, suitsLow to medium1–2 inches awayShort bursts; do not soak; brush the nap afterward
Cashmere, knitsLow2–3 inches awaySteam lightly, then lay flat to reshape; never stretch
SilkLowSeveral inches away, inside outAvoid water spits; test on a seam first
Polyester, nylonLow2–3 inches awayToo close leaves shine; keep moving

Leather, suede, waxed cottonDo not steam–Moisture and heat can stain or stiffen them

Steamer or iron?

Use a steamer for suits, dresses, knitwear, delicate fabrics and quick touch-ups, because it does not flatten or shine. Use an iron when you want crisp creases, such as trouser creases or a sharp shirt collar, or for heavy cotton and linen that need pressure. Many people keep both: a steamer for daily use and an iron for formal shirts.

Common steaming mistakes

  • Holding the head still: it can leave a damp patch or spot. Keep it moving.
  • Using hard tap water without descaling: scale clogs the steamer and spits flakes.
  • Steaming a dirty garment: heat can set stains. Clean first, then steam.
  • Wearing it straight away: let the fabric cool and dry first.

How to clean and descale a garment steamer

Empty the tank after each use so water does not sit. Every month or two (sooner with hard water), fill the tank with an equal mix of white vinegar and water, or follow the maker’s descaling instructions, run it for a few minutes, empty it and rinse with clean water. Always check the manual first; some makers advise against vinegar.

Frequently asked questions

Can you use tap water in a garment steamer?

Yes, if your water is soft. With hard water, use distilled or filtered water, or descale regularly, to avoid mineral build-up and white flakes.

Does steaming clothes kill bacteria and odors?

Steam helps freshen fabric and reduce odors, but it is not a replacement for washing. Clean clothes first if they are dirty or stained.

Can you steam a wool suit?

Yes. Use low to medium steam from an inch or two away in short bursts, then let the suit cool on a shaped hanger.

Why does my steamer spit water?

Usually because it has not fully heated, the hose is sagging and collecting condensation, or there is scale build-up. Let it heat fully, keep the hose straight and descale regularly.
